What a gift builds

The Inheritance is the undergraduate theology journal of Patrick Henry College. It is edited entirely by students under the supervision of the endowed Chair of Theology, and it publishes one issue each semester written by students, alumni, and faculty.

It receives no institutional funding. Everything you see — the printed issue, the honoraria that let a student take the work seriously, the events that turn a journal into a conversation — exists because someone paid for it. That is the whole case.

WHAT A GIFT FUNDS
  • PRINTINGThe physical issue, including copies sent to donors who want one in hand. A journal that exists only as a file is not the same object.
  • HONORARIAPayment for student, alumni, and faculty contributors, so that serious writing is treated as work rather than as a favour.
  • EVENTSLectures, symposia, and issue launches — the occasions where the arguments in the journal are made in a room, out loud.
  • REACHMarketing and spreading the word, so that the writing finds readers beyond the people who already know us.
  • PRODUCTIONDesign, artwork, software, font licences, and hosting: the unglamorous costs of publishing something that looks like it deserves to be read.
HOW TO GIVE

We are finalising the giving route with the College. If you would like to give now, or you are a foundation evaluating a grant, please write to us directly.

Who may contribute

Students, alumni, and faculty of Patrick Henry College. You do not need to be a theology major. What we ask for is an argument you are willing to defend, made carefully, with the sources actually read.

How it works

One issue is published each semester. Pitches and drafts are read by the student editorial team and reviewed under the supervision of the Chair of Theology. Contributors are paid an honorarium where funding allows.

Join the team

The journal is run by students — editing, design, layout, and events. If you would rather build the thing than write for it, there is room for you.
